The good character requirement – what does it mean?

  All visa applications in Australia require applicants to be of ‘good character’ and all applicants will be assessed under the character requirements outlined in section 501 of the Migration Act 1958.

  For the Australian government to determine whether you are of good character, they may request that you provide police certificates for each country you have lived in for 12 months or more, over the last 10 years, since turning 16 years of age.

  You may not satisfy the good character requirement if:

  · You have a substantial criminal record;

  · You have been convicted of escaping from immigration detention;

  · you are or have been a member of a group or organisation that Minister for Immigration reasonably suspects of involvement with criminal conduct; or

  · your past and present criminal or general conduct show that you are not of good character.

  If you would like more information to understand what it means to be of ‘good character’ or would like assistance to obtain a police check for your visa application, please contact Adrian via Meiyi.ai.
